2014 Ford Edge Preview 2014 Ford Edge Preview
by Richard Roch
Pros: Introduced in 2007, and currently nearing the end of its second generation, the Ford Edge is a very comfortable and quiet CUV with safe, dynamic handling and attractive base pricing. Given the revisions to come in 2015, there will probably be some good deals to be had on 2014 models, especially the flashy Edge Sport.

Cons: Lower trim levels feature somewhat disappointing material selection, while the overload of on-screen buttons tends to distract drivers. The automatic transmission is rather slow to respond. Edge buyers should also beware of pricey options and packages.

2014 Ford Edge Price: There are four models to choose from this year including SE, SEL, Limited, and Sport. Because of all the available engines and drivetrain options, the price range is substantial -- from $30,999 to $43,599.

2014 Ford Edge Fuel Economy: Models with the 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine burn as little as 6.6L/100km on the highway and 9.9L/100km in the city. Expect these numbers to increase to 7.3 and 11.1L/100km, respectively, with the 3.5L V6. Obviously, the 3.7L V6 in the Edge Sport consumes even more gas -- 8.8 and 12.2L/100km.

Improvements and Changes: The Ford Edge returns basically unchanged for 2014.

2014 Ford Edge Powertrain: Ford offers three different engines with the 2014 Edge. The standard 3.5L V6 produces 285 horsepower through a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. You can also select a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost that generates 240 horsepower, or a 3.7L V6 rated at 305 horsepower. This larger mill's autobox comes with paddle shifters. All-wheel drive is optional on all models, but standard in Sport trim.

Cargo Capacity: The trunk can hold up to 912 litres of gear -- 1,951 litres with the rear seats folded.

Safety: The list includes ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, AdvanceTrac stability control, and traction control. A rearview camera, blind spot monitoring system, and adaptive cruise control are available.

Comparing the 2014 Ford Edge: This crossover rivals with the likes of the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Murano, Subaru Tribeca, and Toyota Highlander/Venza.
